Olav-Andreas Ervik, SalMar’s new CEO, has spoken of his excitement at taking over the reins one of the world’s leading salmon farming companies.
He was appointed to the post yesterday after Trond Williksen unexpectedly announced his resignation as chief executive.
The move comes amid the Chinese arrest at the weekend of a Norwegian citizen, once linked to SalMar, over allegations of salmon smuggling, although the two episodes have not been directly linked.
Williksen has been CEO since late 2016, during which time he has overseen considerable growth in sales and profits.
SalMar enjoyed its best ever year in 2017. A statement said the board regretted his decision to be released but added that he will be available to the company for the next six months, the period of his notice.
Williksen said in a statement that his job as CEO had been demanding, but he now wanted to spend some time away from the world of business to focus on his own interests.
He added: ‘I am confident that in Olav-Andreas Ervik, SalMar will have a leader who is able to build on the present foundations of the company.’
Ervik (pictured) said last night: ‘SalMar is a wonderful company with talented employees and has a unique corporate culture.
‘I will be meeting many of our people at important group meetings this weekend, and look forward to working with them and all the other employees inside SalMar.
‘Our ambition is to be the world\’s best (salmon) breeder, and in this I am confident we will succeed.’
Ervik, who is 41, has more than 20 years’ experience with the aquaculture industry, and has worked for SalMar since 2012.
Prior to his appointment as director of farming in 2014, he served as general manager of SalMar Farming.
He has also held management positions in Lerøy Midnor, Scottish Sea Farms (where SalMar has a 50 per cent ownership share) and Lerøy Hydrotech.
