Grimsby plans big presence at IceFish

GRIMSBY is planning a significant presence at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition and Awards, which takes place later this week. The Grimsby fish market gets most of its white fish supplies from Iceland, but the port believes it also has a lot to offer the country in return.

Steve Norton, chief executive of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, said: ‘This is a very important fisheries exhibition which attracts some leading names and it offers us a great opportunity to showcase Grimsby and what we have to offer. We can also take our message about Grimsby being at the centre of seafood in the UK.’

‘The exhibition covers every aspect of the commercial fishing industry from catching and locating to processing and packaging, right through to marketing and distribution of the final product.

‘The Icelandic Ministry of Industries and Innovation and the Federation of Icelandic Industries are just two of the key organisations supporting the exhibition. We are also working with UKTI and the UK Ambassador to Iceland, Stuart Gill and his team in Reykjavik.

He said a number of local companies, including those in the fish packaging business, would be at the show and the FMA would exhibit under its new brand name ‘Seafood Grimsby and Humber’.

Final plans for the Grimsby presence are still being drawn up. The long-running Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition, which runs from Thursday-Saturday, was established in 1984 and has, since the first event, more than doubled in size.

The three-year cycle of the show is a direct response to the wishes of the exhibiting companies, as it ensures they have new products on display at each event.

The organisers say that even in the face of economic turmoil of the last few years it has managed to attract nearly 500 companies from 33 countries and an attendance of well over 12,000 from 50 companies.

At the last event in 2011, an eco-labelling and traceability seminar entitled ‘Icelandic Responsible Fisheries Programme’ was organised by Promote Iceland and held alongside the exhibition in association with The Fisheries Association of Iceland.

Visitors at this year’s exhibition, which is now sold out, will see a large number of new international exhibitors, as well as many exhibitors who are returning for the largest commercial fishing exhibition in the North.
