ANTI-FREEZE SECRET TO COD SURVIVAL
COD carry a type of anti-freeze in the form of proteins in their blood which allows them to survive ultra-low temperatures and avoid sea lice, researchers at the University of Oslo have found. The proteins bind to tiny ice crystals in the blood of the cod and prevent the ice from growing and causing damage to its body.  The scientists say the genome that controls the production of anti-freeze proteins is therefore crucial for the cod to survive in Arctic regions.
MAJOR FROZEN FOOD DEAL
The US based Sysco Corporation has purchased the UK foodservice distributor Kent Frozen Foods for an undisclosed sum. Sysco also owns M&J Seafoods and other similar businesses in Britain.  Kent Frozen Foods CEO Chris Beckley said: ‘We are thrilled to be joining the Sysco family – for our business, our colleagues and our customers. They now have the added benefit of support from the world’s largest foodservice company and this presents an exciting and positive time ahead for all of us.’ Sysco has global annual sales of almost £40 billion.
BARENTS SEA PRAWN FISHING EXPANSION URGED
THE Norwegian government wants to see an increase in prawn fishing in the Barents Sea. Fisheries minister Per Sandberg says the move would be sustainable and biologically sound, but he believes the current lack of profitability may be deterring vessel owners. He is now looking at ways in which the government can help to make it more commercially attractive. Sandberg has also asked for suggestions from the industry on how any expansion should be managed.
NORDIC SEAFOOD TREAT FOR WILLIAM AND KATE
THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were treated to the seafood delights of Norway during their royal visit to Scandinavia last week. As guests of King Harald and Queen Sonja at a royal dinner in Oslo they were served king crab and avocado wool with potato chips as a starter.  The main course was poached halibut served with onion and with truffle and mustard sauce. King Harald spoke about how climate and terrain had forged Norway\’s culture and he also referred to the strong bonds between the two countries.
