Baltic firm in trout farm bid
A BALTIC fish farming and processing company has submitted an application to build an offshore fish farm complex off the coast of Estonia.
PR Foods wants a permit to produce up to 2,050 tonnes of rainbow trout. It also wants the permit to last for at least 50 years.
The company – which submitted the application through its subsidiary Saaremere Kala – told the Tallin Stock Exchange that, if approved, it hopes the development would take place in Estonian waters near the island of Hiiumaa.
The company sees access to raw material, especially farmed rainbow trout, as an important part of its strategy.
This is thought to be the second or third fish farm expansion project by PR Foods in recent months.
The fat growing company is engaged in the production and processing of fish products in Finland and Estonia, and fish farming in Sweden and Finland.
Trout farmed in the lakes of Sweden and in the archipelago in the Turku area in Finland, as well as salmon imported from Norway, are processed in the production facilities of Heimon Kala OY in Renko, Finland, and in Vettel OĂś on the island Saaremaa, Estonia.
It has also expanded into the UK market over the past 18 months with two important acquisitions.
In July last year it bought John Ross Jr of Aberdeen and the then Gloucestershire business Coln Valley Smokery, which is part of the John Ross Group.
