Awards mark aquaculture excellence

TWO leading aquaculture companies have been recognised in the Highlands and Islands Business Excellence Awards, announced on Friday.

Marine Harvest won the Benromach Award for Excellence in International Business. Scotland’s biggest salmon farmer, which supports almost 700 jobs in the Highlands and Islands, was commended for its success in exporting across the world and its plans to grow production over the coming years.

Steve Bracken, the company’s business support manager, said: ‘We are delighted to receive this award. Marine Harvest are investing heavily to support our growth to meet increasing demand – providing well paid jobs and helping to support a sustainable Scottish economy.

‘I would like to thank each and every employee at Marine Harvest and our customers for supporting our success.’

Meanwhile, Aquascot received the SCDI Award for Excellence in People Development, recognising the company’s approach to learning and development in the workplace, its investment in upskilling existing employees and commitment to personal development.

Anne Allen, head of human relations at the seafood business, said: ‘We are very pleased to receive this award – recognising our commitment to learning and development.

‘As a now wholly employee owned company investing in our workforce is a priority and has allowed us to drive our business forward, meeting the needs of our partners, supply chain and customers.’

The awards, which are run by SCDI (Scottish Council for Development and Industry) and supported by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Crown Estate Scotland among others, were presented by the deputy first minister, John Swinney.

They showcased the achievements of organisations from across the Highlands and Islands and celebrated business excellence in a range of sectors.

‘The Highlands and Islands is home to a diverse, strong and vibrant economy which has grown into a regional powerhouse – breaking boundaries, setting standards and demonstrating true leadership in many sectors,’ said Jane Cumming, SCDI Highlands and Islands chair.

‘The SCDI Awards recognise businesses for their significant strengths and successes. We commend all of the award winners on their continued investment and growth in the region and the vital contributions that their companies make towards our country’s sustainable economic growth.’
