Asian industry eyes global market

THE Asian aquaculture industry gathered in Kuala Lumpur at the end of last month to hear about marketing trends, tilapia genetics, disease management, and the transformation of grouper farming.

The Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2017 (APA17) conference and exhibition, from July 24-27, was attended by approximately 3,000 participants from 46 countries, with 87 per cent coming from Asia. Others were from the US, Canada and South America (137) and from Europe (75).

There were 444 abstracts with 325 oral presentations and 119 posters – and 37 conference sessions, on marine shrimp, freshwater fish culture, nutrition and aquafeeds.

At the trade show, there were more than 170 booths. Exhibitors came from 20 countries, led by Malaysia, Singapore, the US, Thailand and Taiwan.

Products on display included complete feeds, feed ingredients and additives, health and diagnostic services, farming equipment and electronics, cages, tanks, liners, nets, pipes and fittings.

Herve Lucien-Brun, a consultant at Aquaculture and Quality of France, gave the first presentation, titled ‘Marketing of farmed seafood from Asia to global markets’.

The second plenary, ‘Transforming the aquaculture industry in Malaysia’, was given by Dr Mazuki Bin Hashim, senior director of Fisheries Biosecurity Division for the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia.

The show’s gold sponsor, Sheng Long, organised a special shrimp industry session which focused on shrimp disease management.

More than 30 participants joined a post conference tour to visit cage culture activities on Pulau Ketam, a land-based grouper hatchery, and a shrimp farm.

APA17 was the annual meeting of the Asian Pacific chapter of the World Aquaculture Society. It was jointly organised by the Malaysian Fisheries Society (MFS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, and World Aquaculture Society.

It was hosted, at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, by the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Ministry of Agriculture and Agro Based Industry, Malaysia. DOF launched a food safety book, the National Fish Health Strategy of Malaysia, during the event.
