UK FISHERIES Minister, Jonathan Shaw today saw how Cornwall's fish industry is working for a sustainable future on a visit to Newlyn and Penzance.
The Minister toured Newlyn fish market and harbour, meeting local fishermen and business people including Seafood Cornwall who showed how the quality of fish is being improved.
Newlyn has benefited from more than £1.5million in grants to boost businesses and to help develop a new fish market.
Mr Shaw said: "Newlyn is seeing a lot of improvements, showing the kind of vision we need to help fishing communities and businesses prosper long-term.
"We want to see coastal communities boosted by more jobs providing high-quality fresh fish, helping to maintain the character and identity of ports like Newlyn, safeguarding fish stocks to secure a sustainable future for people throughout the industry."
Mr Shaw also inspected the Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committee patrol boat, and visited Penzance harbour where he met local sea anglers and charter boat skippers.
Sea anglers are being urged to have their say on new proposals to benefit their sport and the marine environment, including conservation measures to improve fish stocks and a new sea angling licence, money from which would be reinvested to benefit anglers and improve services.
Mr Shaw added: "Recreational sea anglers make a substantial contribution to the economy, and we need to ensure that their needs are considered as we develop fisheries policies."

Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
