Anstruther Fish Bar scoops top training award
Published:  23 January, 2008

SCOTLAND'S famous Anstruther Fish Bar has today scooped the Staff Training and Development Award at this year’s national Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition.

Owners, Robert and Alison Smith were presented with the award by Ainsley Harriot at an awards ceremony at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.

The award is presented to the fish and chip shop which has shown the most commitment to the training and development of its staff.

Alison Smith commented: “Our most important asset is our staff and we’re delighted to be able to take this award home for them. They work extremely hard to maintain our reputation as one of the top chippies in Scotland and helping them progress in their career gives us great satisfaction.”

The national Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition is organised by Seafish and this year celebrates its 20th year. Richard Wardell, training advisor for Seafish, said: “The winning shop has robust training standards in place and really stood out as an excellent example of a shop giving something back to its staff. As well as staff appraisals, external and internal training, the management team also encourages staff to input ideas to the business and work their way up the career ladder.”

Robert and Alison were up against two other fish and chip shops for the award: The Bay in Stonehaven and The Frying Squad in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

The Townhead Café in Biggar, Scotland was crowned the UK’s chippy champion at the awards ceremony, followed by Andy’s Fish Bar of Swalincote in second place and Seniors from Thornton Cleveleys in third.
