IN October 2007, exports of Norwegian seafood totalled NOK 4 billion. This is the highest value ever registered for exports of Norwegian seafood in one month, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC). Exports were NOK 75 million higher than in the same month last year.
This year to date, exports of Norwegian seafood total NOK 29.4 billion, an increase of NOK 1.2 billion compared with the same period last year. This is also a new record for the January-October period.
Norwegian salmon is the most important product, with an export value of NOK 1.5 billion in October. This is a decline of NOK 55 million compared with October last year. The record volume of Norwegian salmon exports keeps the value of the exports high, despite a fall in prices since October last year. This year to date, exports of Norwegian salmon total NOK 14.1 billion, an increase of NOK 447 million.
Herring exports in October totalled NOK 540 million, an increase of NOK 293 million or 118 per cent compared with October 2006. Exports of mackerel totalled NOK 567 million, a decline of NOK 55 million or 9 per cent.
Exports of codfish declined by NOK 104 million or 22 per cent in October to around NOK 1 billion. The biggest decline was in frozen codfish, which fell by NOK 96 million. Exports of stockfish fell by NOK 24 million in October to a value of NOK 91 million. Exports of clipfish totalled NOK 462 million in October, an increase of NOK 25 million compared with October 2006.
In October, exports to Russia increased by NOK 310 million or 100 per cent. This is attributable to strong growth in exports of herring, Norwegian salmon, mackerel and Norwegian fjord trout. Exports to Ukraine increased by NOK 111 million or 107 per cent. Here, too, the increase was due to strong growth in exports of herring, Norwegian salmon, mackerel and Norwegian fjord trout.
It was noted that exports to the EU fell by NOK 231 million in October compared with October 2006. This was largely accounted for by reduced exports to Denmark, the UK and Portugal of the biggest markets in the EU.
