Stockfish showed a slight increase in September of 3% to NOK 121 million |
THE value of exports of Norwegian seafood in September totalled NOK 2.8 billion, according to the latest figures from Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC). This is a decrease of NOK 343 million compared with September 2006.
For the year to date, seafood exports total NOK 25.5 billion, an increase of NOK 1.1 billion. This is an export record for the January-September period.
The decline witnessed in September is attributable, it is said, to the reduced volume of fish caught in the wild and a reduction in the price of Norwegian salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout.
An extraordinary September month in 2006, combined with the current strength of the Norwegian krone, means that September this year is showing a decline compared with September 2006, says NSEC managing director Terje E. Martinussen. In addition, the good demand for and reduced availability of raw materials has resulted in higher prices for groundfish feed.
Despite an increase in the volume of exports of Norwegian salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout in September, the total value has declined by 4.4% to NOK 1.6 billion. For the year to date, exports of Norwegian salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout are valued at NOK 13.6 billion, an increase of 3% or NOK 400 million. Of this amount, Norwegian salmon accounted for NOK 12.6 billion. Russia is the biggest market for Norwegian Fjord Trout, with exports to Russia for the year to date valued at NOK 371 million. France remains the biggest market for Norwegian salmon, with exports to France valued at NOK 2 billion.
In September, exports of clipfish declined by 8.6% to NOK 309 million. However, exports for the year to date are up by 12% to NOK 2.2 billion. Portugal is the biggest recipient, with a value in September of NOK 94 million.
In September, saltfish exports showed a fall of 10% to NOK 67 million, although for the January-September period exports have grown by no less than 32% to NOK 1.3 billion. Italy is the biggest recipient, with a value in September of NOK 24 million. Stockfish showed a slight increase in September of 3% to NOK 121 million. For the year to date, exports of stockfish have increased by 18% to NOK 442 million[GT1] . In September, exports of stockfish to Italy were valued at NOK 80 million.
As with other species of fish, exports of herring and mackerel in September are down compared to September 2006. Exports of herring show a reduction of 13% to a value of NOK 147 million. For the year to date, exports of herring have fallen by 2.5% to a value of NOK 1.7 billion. In September, mackerel exports were down 35% to NOK 76 million. For the January-September period, exports show a decline of 24.5% to a value of NOK 520 million.
