Gore was at the centre of an embarrassing row yesterday after conservationists accused him of eating an endangered species just one week after Live Earth - his international music event to raise awareness of environmental issues.

According to People magazine, the former vice-president attended a rehearsal dinner for his daughter's marriage the night before the wedding. The six-course tasting menu included Chilean sea bass - also known as Patagonian toothfish.

Gore was swiftly criticised by conservationists, with Rebecca Keeble of Humane Society International reportedly complaining that the species is under danger from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities, and stating, "Al Gore could choose something else to eat".

But, according to The Telegraph, the fish enjoyed by the Gores were not endangered or illegally caught.

Rather, the restaurant later confirmed, they had come from one of the world's few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish, and were caught and documented in compliance with Marine Stewardship Council regulations.
