WELL-KNOWN chef and restaurateur, Rick Stein has presented Padstow-based fisherman Billy Freeman with his certificate as a newly qualified member of the Responsible Fishing Scheme.
Billy supplies various restaurants and local markets with a mixture of fish including high value species such as John Dory, Dover sole and turbot – and was sponsored by The Seafood Restaurant to enter the scheme. The presentation took place in Padstow harbour recently where Rick was accompanied by Michael Bacon from industry body Seafish.
Billy’s boat the “Su Jean” is a 32ft long demersal trawler that was built in 1979 and fishes the south western approaches off Cornwall and Devon.
The Responsible Fishing Scheme, developed by Seafish in conjunction with industry and supported by the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG), offers a guarantee to seafood buyers such as Rick that they can expect the highest quality products, whilst at the same time being confident that the vessels from which they source fish have minimised the impact of their operations on the environment.
