SIMPSON'S of Hull, the principal Asda monkfish supplier, confirmed today that they were sourcing monkfish tails for the retailer following the decision by Asda to lift its ban on stocking Northern Monkfish supplies on its shelves.
The Asda move followed a successful combined operation involving the fishing industry, scientific input and processors which led to a decision by the Marine Conservation Society to remove Northern Stock monks from its "fish to avoid" list. Asda have now stood by their pledge to restock Northern Stock fish if the conservation society gave the green light.
Simpsons said today they are "activly looking" for suppliers.
Meanwhile Mike Park, the executive chairman of the Scottish White Fish Producers' Association said the Asda dcision represented an "effective and tangible" outcome to their campaign to restore the Northern Stock fish to the shelves.
And it underlines that the fishing industry had to have comprehensive back up for its camaigns against decisions which were clearly wrong.
"In the past, we have been in the position where we had nothing to back up our arguments. Now thanks to new partnerships we are able to tell the whole story. But we have to keep an effective information campaign going."
