Finnie...new look inshore |
SCOTTISH Fsheries Minister Ross Finnie today announced a review that will look at ways of improving the future management of Scotland's inshore fisheries.
The Minister said:"The Scottish Inshore Fisheries Advisory Group has highlighted the need for a more strategic and proactive approach to the management of the inshore, and there are a number of unresolved issues in the inshore which I am keen to address through a strategic review.
"SIFAG provides valuable advice on issues relating to Scotland's important inshore fisheries. Following a brief review of the group's progress over the last three years, I am pleased that refinements have been proposed to help the group develop and maximise its potential.
"In particular, I have asked my officials to develop proposals for a strategic review of the inshore. Inshore fisheries provide an important resource, particularly for rural coastal communities."
The proposed strategic review of inshore fisheries, which will be carried out by SEERAD's Inshore Fisheries Branch in partnership with inshore stakeholders, was discussed at today's SIFAG meeting. The review will look at the operation to date of the main legislative tools used in the inshore (the Inshore Fishing (Scotland) Act 1984 and the Sea Fisheries (Shellfish) Act 1967) as well as exploring the key principles to inform the future management of the inshore.
The Scottish Inshore Fisheries Advisory Group was established in 1999 with the aim of giving stakeholders a greater role in inshore policy development. The group committed to review its progress after three years.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
