Grimsby fish workers offered the Hollywood treatment
Published:  26 July, 2006

GRIMSBY fish dock workers are being invited to put away their fish filleting knives for a couple of days for a brief chance of fame.

Makers of the Hollywood film Atonement, part of which is being made on Grimsby Fish Docks, want volunteers to act as extras during the two day shooting - and they will get paid for it!

Shooting, which had been delayed for a week, is now due to take place on the night of August 16th and 17th and possibly the 18th and Candy Marlowe, the assistant director in charge of extras, said they were looking mainly for youngish men with short haircuts who would fit the bill as early World War Two soldiers. The part romance, part war film takes place in Northern France in 1940 when thousands of British and French soldiers were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk and had to be evacuated to Britain before being over-run by the advancing Germans.

The film will start illustrious names like Vanessa Redgrave and Kristin Scott Thomas and Hollywood star Keira Knightley. The story is based on Ian McEwan's top selling book and will be directed by Joe Wright who also directed the TV hit Pride and Prejudice.

Just a few yards from fish processing factories, British and German soldiers will "fight" it out in a number of bloody engagements, complete with mock gunfire and shell blasts. However, although the film is set at the time of one of the bloodiest episodes during the Second World War, it would be essentially based on a love story.

The filmmakers will be using the old Ice House as a set for a French war damaged town because they say it is better than anything they have found in France.

The Ice House, which once produced ice for the trawler fleet and the fish merchants is now largely a ruin, looking as though it had been damaged during a war.

Ms Marlowe said fish factory workers, who may well run shoulders with the leading star James McAvoy, would need to look like potential soldiers. However, the make up department would be able to give them a haircut 1940s style - ie a short back and sides.

Those who are hired will be paid £50 for a night's work and then, if they have the energy, they can return to the fish processing plants. Anyone interested should e-mail: dunkirkextras@gmail.com
