THE EU rapid alert for week 26 has detected mercury in sliced smoked swordfish from Denmark, notified by Italy, Portugal notified that they had found too high content of sulphites in frozen crab legs from Angola and Italy notified that they had found too high content of sulphites in cooked prawns (Penaeus vannamei) from Thailand via France.
In addition, Italy notified that they had found the unauthorized substance nitrofuran (metabolite) – nitrofurazone (SEM) in frozen shrimps from Bangladesh via the UK and the UK notified that they had found the same substance in raw headless shell on fresh water shrimps from Bangladesh.
Consumers can be reassured that products subject to an alert notification have been withdrawn or are in the process of being withdrawn from the market. The Member States have their own mechanisms to carry out such actions, including the provision of detailed information through the media if necessary.
