Norway: Seafood Federation establishes own commission on fish farm escapes
Published:  23 March, 2006

THE Norwegian Seafood Federation is taking the initiative for getting the escape occasions that occurred in Norway in January properly investigated. The aim is to collect as much information as possible about these escape occasions in order to identify potential weaknesses in today’s fish farms and to recommend potential improvements.

“We now have a good possibility to learn form the escapes that took place on salmon and cod farms in January 2006 as a result of heavy storms. Because the authorities still have not established a break down commission we have taken the initiative for the industry investigating these breakdowns itself”, says Aina Valland, departmental director for the environment at the Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL).

The Norwegian Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund (FHF) is funding the work and Ulf Winther at Sintef fisheries and aquaculture has been appointed project director.

This project is not equal to an independent commission run by the authorities but a good tool in the escape preventative work and a necessary project due to the fact that th eauthorities still have not yet established a commission, Valland said.
