Celebrity chef, James Martin shares seafood recipes to promote heart health

CELEBRITY chef, James Martin will be live online at www.webchats.tv on Friday March 17 at 1400hrs to share his best fish recipes. He will be joined by Doctor Ray Rice, Secretary of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL).

James Martin has always had a great love for food and at the age of 5 he was to be found in kitchens. He is best known for his appearances on Ready Steady Cook and is a regular on the UK Food Channel.

The British Heart Foundation recommends eating at least one portion of oil-rich fish a week to help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Most Brits tend to eat only a third of the amount recommended (140g) by experts and those missing out may be putting their lives at risk. Coronary heart disease is currently the nation's number one killer with up to 117,000 people dying each year and 2.6 million people living with heart and circulatory disease.

Heart friendly oil-rich fish, like mackerel, fresh tuna, salmon, trout, herring and sardines, are the best natural source of omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. These heart friendly fatty acids have been proven to lower blood pressure; reduce the risk of hardened arteries and dying prematurely from a heart attack.

Omega 3 is one of two fatty acids that are essential because they cannot be made in the body and must be provided by the diet.

Omega 3 is also beneficial for brain development in the unborn child and in conditions such as arthritis, dyslexia and depression.

Many of us aren't eating enough of these kinds of fish because we are unsure of how to cook them. The first step is taking a more Mediterranean approach to cuisine where fish like sardines appear regularly on the menu and oil-rich fish are a staple part of the diet.
