THE EU-rapid alert for week 5 found unauthorized substance nitrofuran (metabolite)-nitrofurazone (SEM) in raw frozen headless shell-on shrimps from India and Bangladesh, notified by the UK. Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins were also found in live mussels from Spain, notified by Italy. Latvia notified of unsuitable organoleptic characteristics of and parasites – nematodes in canned fish liver from Poland via Estonia. Consumers can be reassured that products subject to an alert notification have been withdrawn or are in the process of being withdrawn from the market. The Member States have their own mechanisms to carry out such actions, including the provision of detailed information through the media if necessary.
