ANOTHER health boost for fish has emerged from Sweden.
For the right sort of fish can lower the risk of dementia, according to a new study from Finland, the Swedish newspaper aftonbladet.se reported.
Finnish scientists have for 20 years followed 1500 people in Finland and have looked at different lifestyle factors and in December the study “Obesity and Dementia” was finalised. Miia Kivipelto, a dementia scientist at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm said: “We discovered that unsaturated fats such as olive oil and fish, lower the risk of dementia by 40-50 percent. "
The hospital where she is a scientist is reportedly a world leader in dementia diseases. Ms Kivipelto went on to say that they have known for a long time that the typical Mediterranean diet is good for the heart, but didn’t know that it is also good for the brain. The brain needs fat, especially in the case of elderly people who may eat an unvaried diet and who therefore will not get the important fat that is good for brain health. It has earlier been believed that dementia is something that comes with age, and not something we can prevent,she said, but this new study shows that we can take care of our brain and improve our memory.
