THE Vietnamese Ministry of Fisheries has given the go ahead for setting up a cold-water fish research, breeding and farming centre in Vietnam’s Lao Cai province in the northern mountains, Thanh Nien News reported.
Work will soon begin on the 1.36 hectare site, expected to cost VND8.4 billion (US$528,000), with its first breedstock and fish products set to roll out in 2007. Le Thanh Luu, head of the Aquaculture Research Institute in the northern region, reportedly said his agency had successfully bred salmon and sturgeon, under another project funded by Finland last year. Of the 50,000 salmon eggs the institute imported from Finland and bred on a trial basis, 70 percent hatched and grew into healthy fish weighing 1.5 kilogram at harvest on average, he continued. He added his institute planned to import another batch of 110,000 salmon eggs this year and expand the pilot farming program to other areas in Vietnam. The Lao Cai province, which boasts clean, large streams and temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius all year round, is claimed to be particularly good for large-scale salmon farming.
