STORNOWAY Coastguard are searching for a Spanish fisherman who fell overboard 145 miles north west of the Butt of Lewis in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Coastguard helicopter from Stornoway and a Nimrod from RAF Kinloss were searching the scene yesterday morning.Stornoway Coastguard were informed of the incident by Falmouth Coastguard who had been informed of the incident by an Irish Coastguard at Malinhead who happened to speak Spanish and picked up a broadcast that the fishermen were making on MF2182 khz. Communications throughout the incident have been difficult since none of the fishermen speak Spanish, so communications are going through Madrid. Dave MacBeth, Stornoway Coastguard Watch Manager said: ”We are very concerned for the safety of this fisherman. Conditions are poor with south easterly gale force winds. The man has no lifejacket on and is wearing heavy oilskins on which will weigh him down.”
