THE recent election in Norway saw the centre-right Government defeated by a red-green alliance consisting of the Labour Party with new partners, the Agrarian Centre Party and the Socialist Left.
Now, voices are being heard in relation to the need for changes in domestic policies on fishing. While some think the policies of the old government should be continued, the Norwegian Coastal Fishermen’s Union today said that the results were a clear order to stop structure politics. The Union added that they are now looking forward to co-operating with a red-green government on the issue of developing a new fishing policy. The chairman of the coastal union, Paul Oddgeir Jensen said that the election is a signal that today’s privatising structure does not have the essential support along the coast and that people along that area are wanting a different fishing policy. He added that the group he represents would be more than willing to enter into a discussion with the new governmental parties regarding the shaping of a new fishing policy.
