AROUND 300,000 salmon are feared to have escaped in the recent Marine Harvest escape at Trustna in Norway and the incident has reinforced calls for an escape commission.

If the escape figure proves accurate, it will be the biggest single escape in Norway’s history and 2005 would become a record year for escapes, according to Kyst.no.

Now the environmental organisation WWF are demanding a commission to deal with escapes.

If the escape is as big as feared, this year will become the worst escape year since 1992.

In a press release, the WWF say that they are worried over this year's escape figures and see escapes as a threat to wild salon stocks.

Marine Harvest are however given praise for their openness regarding the escape and that the fish farm have hired a firm to investigate the cause of the escape. The general secretary of WWF Norway, Rasmus Hansson said: “ Openness is important both for the industry to learn something from the incident and for the industry’s own reputation.”
