EU detects mercury in frozen swordfish loins from Vietnam
Published:  24 August, 2005

THE EU rapid alert system for week 33 has detected mercury in blue shark from Spain, notified by Italy, too high count of aerobic mesophiles in smoked marlin from Spain, notified by Italy, frozen yellow fine tuna loins via the Netherlands had been treated with carbon monoxide, notified by Italy, and finally Italy notified that mercury had been found in frozen swordfish loins from Vietnam.

Alert notifications are sent when the food or feed presenting the risk is on the market and when immediate action is required.

Consumers can be reassured that products subject to an alert notification have been withdrawn or are in the process of being withdrawn from the market. The Member States have their own mechanisms to carry out such actions, including the provision of detailed information through the media if necessary.
