At the Environment Agency we’re doing everything within our power to increase the number of salmon back into Britain’s waters. Beside improving habitats and water quality, our strategy also encompasses the salmon hatchery at Kielder, originally built in 1978 to mitigate losses from the construction of the Kielder dam.

Living on-site in this beautiful, remote location, you’ll be responsible for a unique operation producing high-quality salmon for the Rivers Tyne, Trent and Esk. Managing and motivating a small team, you’ll apply fish-rearing expertise to ensure good practice in the safe, continuous operation of the hatchery. At the same time you’ll need the communication skills to inform and enthuse the visiting public, and put people in the picture about our policies. Its an opportunity to live and breathe your passion for this vital work and make a hugely important contribution.

Salmon-rearing knowledge is essential, along with the ability to apply it to secure the highest standards of fish welfare. Ideally, we’ll be looking for at least five years’ relevant experience, together with an awareness of health and safety and environmental management.
