SCOT GOV - BUCKIE FISHING VISIT
Published:  03 January, 2012

Fisheries Secretary welcomes one of Scotland's first 2012 prawn landings in Buckie.

Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead will be in Buckie on Wednesday (January 4) to welcome one of the first prawn landings of 2012.

Mr Lochhead will be accompanied by Environment Minister Stewart Stevenson to meet the Fraserburgh-registered Virtuous, one of a number of Scottish boats which has been fishing over the New Year.

The Virtuous' prawn catch will be taken directly from the harbour for processing at Buckie-based Moray Seafoods.

Mr Lochhead said: "Scotland's fishermen do an amazing job, often in very difficult and dangerous circumstances, to ensure we can enjoy the finest and freshest seafood.

"Sandy West and the crew of the Virtuous have been fishing over New Year and I'll be on hand to meet them as they land their first catch of 2012 in Buckie.

"By landing in Buckie, the prawns can be taken straight to the factory for processing before making their way to the nation's dinner plates.

"Scotland's fish and shellfish is increasingly popular overseas - recognising the high quality of the product - and made up nearly 60 per cent of all Scottish food exports in 2010, with a value of £623 million. So, on behalf of all Scots, I'd like to thank our skippers for their efforts and wish them a successful 2012."
