NORWAY’S Food Safety Authority has confirmed the presence of the Pancreas Disease (PD) virus in SalMar Farming’s site Singsholmen in Hitra municipality.
SalMar Farming AS is a subsidiary of SalMar ASA and its activity is salmon farming in Nord-Møre and Trøndelag.
The site in question has about two million fish with an average weight of about 800 grams. Book value of the biomass is approximately NOK 50 million. About 500,000 of the fish are vaccinated against PD. The suspicion about the disease came after a routine health check at the site.
All SalMar sites in Nord-Møre and Sør-Trøndelag will now be examined for PD virus to get an overview of the situation. All but two of SalMars sites in the area have so far been examined and there has not been any further detection of the virus. Sites belonging to other farmers in the region will also be examined.
SalMar participates in the group “Stop the PD virus to Central Norway”. Further handling of the situation associated with PD in the area will be done in cooperation between other fish farmers and the Food Safety Authority. Alternative measures to harvesting out will be considered.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
