Seafood suppers swell RNLI coffers
Published:  15 December, 2011

DINERS at two seafood suppers held recently on the Isle of Mull have raised more than £1,500 for Tobermory RNLI.

The annual ‘Seafood Extravaganza’ at Dervaig Village Hall on the west coast of the island was again a sell out. The centrepiece of the supper was the famous Dervaig ‘seafood plank’ which features Mull’s superb shellfish, including lobsters, langoustines, oysters, crab and salmon from the waters around the island. Diners on the night raised £500 to support the work of Tobermory RNLI’s volunteer crew.

A few days later in the south of the island, the Inverlussa Mussel Farm hosted its annual buffet supper on the shores of Loch Spelve. Those fortunate enough to get a ticket not only had the opportunity to feast on mussels fresh from the sea loch but also raised £1,082 for the lifeboat charity.

Tobermory RNLI Coxswain Phil Higson said: “There is a natural affinity between those who harvest the finest produce from around our island shores and our volunteer crews. We’re very grateful for the generosity of those who organised and attended these suppers which will help Tobermory RNLI continue to help save lives at sea.’”

Meanwhile, RNLI supporters in the west of Scotland raised £3,074 when a charity auction was held at Portavadie Marina. The marina’s nearest lifeboat station is Tighnabruaich and the marina’s general manager Iain Jurgensen said that without everyone’s generosity the RNLI would not be capable of providing the peace of mind for sailors to enjoy the water safely.

He drew attention to the preventative sea safety checks that are held throughout the year at Portavadie and stressed that prevention is better than cure.

This was echoed by Campbell McFall, one of the Marina’s berth holders and a supporter of the auction. He emphasised the effort made by the RNLI in ensuring the safety of people on the sea and lochs on the West Coast.

There were more than 20 lots at the marina’s second charity auction ranging from a free boat listing with Boatshed Scotland to a three-night stay in one of Portavadie’s five-star luxury apartments, and an oil painting by resident artist Anne Hewitt.

Elsewhere, Wick RNLI lifeboat Roy Barker 2 was launched on Saturday morning after Aberdeen Coastguard received a call for help from the fishing vessel Spindrift.
The vessel, with a crew of two, was creel fishing in the vicinity of Wick bay when it fouled its propeller. The lifeboat was quickly on scene and towed the vessel to the river harbour, where the casualty beached and cleared the problem when the tide went out.
