Seafish invites feedback from industry on developing seafood labelling legislation
Published:  14 December, 2011

Seafish has invited industry to provide input on proposed new changes on the way that seafood products should be labelled in the future.

A number of proposals are in the pipeline, each of which is expected to impact in a slightly different way on different categories and stages in the supply chain.

Fiona Wright of the Seafish Legislation team says: “As well as varying in their requirements, these proposals are included under a number of different legal regimes: namely hygiene, marketing and consumer information, and as a result they use different definitions. This creates a potential recipe for confusion and a greater burden on industry - one which we are seeking to make clearer for industry stakeholders.”

Seafish has developed a new Guidance Note on this whole issue, ‘Impacts of ongoing legislative changes on seafood labelling, to add to its existing Guidance Note on the Food Information Regulation. The organisation would welcome feedback from anyone in industry on the legislative changes and thoughts on how the new Regulation may impact individual businesses.

Any comments can be made by contacting Fiona Wright at Seafish (f_wright@seafish.co.uk).
