SCOTTISH AND UK GOVERNMENTS MUST SHOW UNITED FRONT ON EC FISHING PROPOSALS: HUME
Published:  02 December, 2011

Scottish Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Jim Hume MSP met with Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairson Thursday to discuss the announcement made by the European Commission last week on proposed changes to laws which could cut the numbers days that Scottish skippers can put to sea.

Mr Hume is extremely concerned that the regulation could have a seriously damaging effect on the Scottish fishing industry and has urged the Scottish Government to continue to work closely with the UK Government when dealing with the Commission to reach a resolution.

Commenting Mr Hume MSP said: “The announcement by the European Commission on proposed changes on how often Scottish skippers can put to sea could have a devastating impact on the Scottish fishing industry.

“I was glad to be able to meet with Richard Lochhead today to highlight my concerns about the proposed measures and to urge him to continue to work closely with the UK Government to find a resolution.

“We should leave no stone unturned in an attempt to try and clear up this situation.

“The Scottish fleet has led the way with their innovative programme to address Cod recovery targets, handed down by Brussels and the Commission should reflect on this when considering their proposals.

“The Scottish and UK Governments agree on this and need to show a united front when dealing with this issue with the Commission next week.”
