Confident Norway orders more new trawlers
Published:  24 November, 2011

NORWAY'S fish catching industry has embarked on a major new trawler building programme.

The latest company to announce a considerable investment is Volstad AS, one of the west coast port of Alesund's oldest established fishing companies, which has decided to renew the freezer trawler Volstad with a brand new ship. It has commissioned a construction contract with the Tersanas shipyard in Turkey.

The new vessel is being designed by another Alesund company, Ship Technology AS, and it will have a high green profile. Ship Technology AS is also designing another freezer trawler to replace Volstad's Atlantic Viking which will be built in the same Turkish yard. Both vessels will have start of the art technology, the latest safety equipment and will be hugely fuel efficient. Ship Technology AS was established in 1976 and has developed as one of Norway's leading specialists in the design of highly advanced ships. The delivery date for the vessels is March and June 2013, respectively.

A month earlier two more Norwegian companies placed orders for trawlers.Vendla AS has commissioned a third revolutionary purse seiner for its fleet. The company has contracted Wärtsilä Ship Design to produce the design for  the vessel which will be built by the company Norwegian Fitjar Mechanical Workshop.  The vessel, which will have strong fuel saving, safety and environmental factors built into the design, is scheduled for delivery in February 2013.

The new vessel, which  is named "Vendla", is the third fishing vessel design that Wärtsilä has produced  for Vendla AS. The order also reflects the growing confidence in the future of the industry by Norwegian trawler owners. Wartsila said that in the new design, it had improved everything from the hull to the onboard equipment and systems. One of the main goals has been to raise the environmental profile. This has been achieved by reducing the fuel consumption and harmful exhaust emissions through optimizing the hull lines of the vessel, and equipping the ship with a hybrid shaft generator and an exhaust treatment system. Together with the ship-owner, it says it has designed a very modern and energy-efficient vessel, which is optimized for the speed needed for either transit or fishing - the two operations that constitute most of the vessel’s operational profile.

The other vessel has been ordered by the Andenes Fishing Company, one of northern Norway's oldest established trawling businesses. The company has decided to renew its factory trawler "Andenes Fish On" with a new vessel which will have a high environmental profile. It will not only be highly energy and fuel efficient, but will also be built to the strictest emission standards. The processing plant on board will be equipped for the production of headed and gutted fish, fillets and shrimp. The new boat will also be built at the Tersanas shipyard in Turkey and is expected to be delivered in August 2013.
