Moray Seafoods appoints two new procurement managers in move that will boost shellfish sector
Published:  23 November, 2011

Shellfish processor Moray Seafoods Ltd has appointed two procurement managers as part of its new development programme following the company’s recent acquisition by Associated Seafoods Ltd.

The appointments of Brian Sutherland and David West as procurement managers underlines the importance Moray Seafoods places in the efficient sourcing of prawns (langoustine), and brown and velvet crab from fishermen around the UK and Ireland.

Returning to the company is Brian Sutherland from Portsoy, who brings tremendous experience having previously been responsible for prawn procurement for Moray Seafoods for 25 years before retiring from the business two years ago.

“Despite having recently retired, I was absolutely delighted to be asked back into the challenging role of prawn procurement,” he says. “I am looking forward to renewing my relationships with fishing skippers and businesses all over the country, particularly as the company has been completely reinvigorated following its acquisition by Associated Seafoods.”

Also moving into the procurement manager role is former Fraserburgh fishing skipper David West, who has worked as a fisherman for the past 35 years and is well-known in the fishing industry in the north-east of Scotland.

David said: “There is huge potential for Moray Seafoods to develop new and mutually beneficial relationships with prawn and crab fishermen that will help us to develop exciting new markets in the UK and abroad.”

Brian and David will be focusing their attentions on buying prawn tails, whole prawns, and brown and velvet crabs from fishermen and other organisations throughout the UK and Ireland.  Moray Seafoods is a major buyer of langoustine from fishermen, previously accounting for £4m to £5m of purchases per annum, although it is envisaged this figure will now rise following the new appointments.

Victor West, managing director, said: “We are progressing well with our restructuring plans for Moray Seafoods and the appointments of Brian and David will give a real boost to our development programme. We are back in the shellfish buying business in a big way and this will provide a much needed boost to prawn and crab fishermen around the country.”
