HUNTER AND MORRISON TRUST LAUNCHES WEBSITE
Published:  15 November, 2011

The Hunter and Morrison Trust is a charity which was established in 1980 to promote the development of the fisheries industries in Shetland for the benefit of the Shetland community, honouring local entrepreneurs, Geordie Hunter and Alex Morrison, both of whom made a significant contribution to Shetland during their lives.

Today, November 15 2011, the trust has embraced technology by launching a brand new website, reminding those involved in the seafood sectors of the trust’s existence and the areas which it supports.  The trustees feel it is important to make more people aware of the good work of the trust and recognise the wide use of the internet for access of information in these modern times.

Ten trustees representing organisations associated with Shetland’s seafood sectors including Lerwick Port Authority and Shetland Islands Council, together with Honorary Secretary, Caroline Hepburn, oversee the work of the Trust, supporting a wide variety of industry-relevant work experience placements, individual training courses and PhD studentships since its creation.  In addition, the trust contributes various prizes to NAFC Marine Centre’s annual prize giving event and assisted the creation of NAFC’s George L. Hunter and Alexander Morrison Rooms where the full mission bridge simulator is now located.

Honorary secretary, Caroline Hepburn, commented: “The trust has supported many worthwhile projects and individuals since it was formed.  Indeed, it has often been in a position to assist when no alternative opportunities appeared to be available.  Recently, along with the Shetland Fishermen’s Association, it has provided a weekly training allowance to new entrants to the catching sector and has also helped young local fishermen towards completing MCA Certificates of Competency.  We will be happy to hear from anyone who wishes to be considered for financial support and there is a short, straightforward application form on the website.

“It would also be fantastic if anybody associated with the industry would consider the trust as a worthy recipient of gifts, donations, legacies or bequests to help further its charitable work in the future.”

Chairman of the trust, Sandy Cluness, added: “The seafood industry is Shetland’s most important, underpinning its economic well being and future prosperity.  It is vital that we continue to assist the sector wherever possible, this being all the more relevant in these challenging economic times.”
