TOBERMORY RNLI’s all weather lifeboat launched on Friday evening to assist a fishing vessel with engine failure off the Isle of Coll.
On board was seventeen year old, Matt Ratcliffe, Tobermory’s newest and youngest volunteer crew member.
Having just been accepted onto the crew, Matt had only received his pager on Tuesday evening but less than 72 hours later was with fellow RNLI volunteers racing to the aid of the two man crew of a nine metre fishing vessel adrift off the treacherous Coll coastline.
The Tobermory lifeboat, Elizabeth Fairlie Ramsey, took the fishing boat under tow and recovered her to Arinagour on Coll.
Second Coxswain James Fairbairns said: “We train as a crew week in, week out so that we are ready at a moment’s notice to respond to calls such as these. Tonight that training paid off and I’m pleased that we not only had a successful outcome but that Matt experienced his first ‘shout’ too.”
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
