In August Peruvian fish exports generated USD 286.7 million in revenue, 21.6 per cent more than in the same month of 2010, when its value was USD 235.6 million.
A total of 184,100 tonnes was sent abroad, 16.1 per cent more than in the same month last year (158,500 tonnes), mainly due to higher sales of canned and frozen products, fishmeal and raw fish oil, according to a report from the Ministry of Production (Produce).
Between January and August of 2011, sales abroad of 1.49 million tonnes generated USD 2,364.1 million. In the same period last year 1.25 million tonnes were exported for USD 1,874.3 million.
In August, 121,400 tonnes of fishmeal, for USD 158.7 million, were exported while in the same month last year 119,400 tonnes (1.6 per cent more), for USD 173.6 million, had been sent abroad.
Between January and August of 2011 a total of 985,200 tonnes of fishmeal was exported, 16.7 per cent over the same period in 2010 (844,100 tonnes).
The main markets of Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Chile and the United Kingdom, which bought 86.4 per cent of total sales traded through August of 2011.
In the first eight months of 2011, a total of 178,500 tonnes of fish oil was sold abroad, 7.4 per cent more than in the same period last year (166,200 tonnes).
Denmark, Belgium, Chile, Canada, Spain and Norway accounted for 82.9 per cent of the fish oil exports recorded up to last August.
These sales generated USD 229 million, which represents a rise of 39.6 per cent over the same period in 2010 (USD 164 million).
