Pair fishing gives herring fishing a boost
Published:  13 October, 2011

WITH the herring fishing season under way, Icelandic skippers have been reporting that pair trawling has become the most efficient method of catching.

According to Gudlaugur Jónsson, skipper of The HB Grandi owned Ingunn AK, fishing inthepastmonth has been very good and production at the company's factory in Vopnafjördur has also been going well now that the flow of raw material has been resumed after a spell of bad weather at the end of last week that interrupted fishing.

His vessel is towing with a sister vessel, the Faxi RE only six to eight hours steaming time from the company factory.

According to Skipper  Gudlaugur Jónsson, the experience has shown that pair trawling on herring is a more effective method  in the autumn. He says that at this time of the year the fish are jumpy and are more easily caught by two vessels with one set of gear than by trawlers operating independently.

He reports  that the fish are in good condition and are of  large grade size with an average size of 380 to 410 grammes. The trawlers  can fish all through the day, but the fishing is best from the evening and into the night hours. The other newsis that mackerel by-catches are minimal. Of the 625 tonnes that Ingunn landed at Vopnafjördur that are now being processed, only 25 tonnes were mackerel.

Meanwhile HB Grandi has welcomed major improvements to the main highway leading to the company's factory at Vopnafjördur .. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, has welcomed this development that is a revolution for the district’s transport links. HB Grandi is easily the largest fishing employer in Vopnafjördur and the poor road conditions in the district have meant that on occasions trucks have been forced to take the longer north routes
