WITH salmon prices at their lowest level for at least six years, this week's news that the value of Norwegian seafood exports have fallen yet again has hardly come as a surprise.
The September figure totalled 5.1 billion kroners (£574.6 million sterling). This was fall of 595 million kroners ( £67 million) compared to September last year when prices were on the rise. The prediction is that salmon prices will continue to fall, although extra demand due to the Christmas build up could steady the ship for a time.
But it is not all gloom for Norwegian fish exporters. For the year 2011 to date exports of Norwegian seafood totals 37.9 billion kroners (£4.27 billion) , and increase of 759 million ( £85.5 million) on the same period in the record breaking year of 2010.
Egil Ove Sundheim, Director of Market Information at the Norwegian Seafood Export Council sad: "The reduction in the value of the exports of Norwegian Seafood is mainly due to reduced prices for salmon.“However, we note that over-the-counter salmon prices have also fallen in a number of markets, and more salmon is ending up in consumers' trolleys.
Last month the Norwegian Seafood Export Council announced a major sales drive in the UK with British seafood market is about to see the launch of a new and unique large-scale campaign from Norway entitled FISK.FøREVER with sustainable fishing at its heart. Fish friers will be among the retailers targeted.
In September, the total value of Norwegian Salmon exports was 2.4 billion kroners (£270 million), a drop of 404 million kroners (45.5 million) compared with September last year. But the value for the year to date is still running at the same level as in 2010. France is still the biggest market for Norwegian Salmon, with . Russia is our next biggest customer .
Thanks to higher prices , Norwegian herring exports last month totalled 174 million kroners £19.6 million) up by 38 million kroners (£4.2 million) from September 2010.
