THE Lerøy Seafood Group, the world's second largest producer of trout and salmon, has announced a major sponsorship deal with the Norwegian Skating Association.
The agreement is unusual in that fishing companies are not usually associated with sponsoring sporting organisations or sporting events. But Leroy believes that as fish is associated with good health the tie-up is a natural one. It also hopes it will develop a new generation of world class athletes in Norway.
The chief executive of Lerøy Seafood Group, Henning Beltestad, said: "Learning are all about the sport of skating and getting to know the Norwegian Skating Association has been very interesting. We are impressed by the wealth and quality of talent within the association and believe the national skating team has enormous potential.
"We look forward to introducing the sport as part of our marketing. We may work in different industries but we have a number of common values, including authentic Norwegian roots and proud traditions."
President Vibecke Sørensen of the Norwegian Skating Association said: "We have a unique talent base and are confident that our young skaters will be making their mark on the international skating arena in the years to come.
"Our cooperation with Lerøy will help us refine and improve this new talent and our efforts within top-level skating," said the skating president.
"Lerøy's [seafood] products are all top quality and we will make use of them as often as possible in our work to produce world-class results on the ice. Our aim is to develop a new generation of top-class athletes based on natural and healthy products from our partner Lerøy."
The association believes that by eating Lerøy's seafood products, in particular Lerøy salmon, Norwegian skaters will gain a natural source of fatty acids such as Omega 3 which are not only healthy but help prevent injuries. Fish, it points out, is also a natural and important source of protein, and very important for athletes when it comes to strengthening bone structure and muscles.
