Scottish Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has raised the important issue of fish discards at the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee (14/09/11).
Mr Hume agrees that the practice of discarding fish back into the sea is environmental and economic madness. Mr Hume made it clear that Scottish Liberal Democrats welcomed the moves by Brussels to ban this practise but wanted assurances that it would come into play, in the given timescales.
Mr Hume said: “The practice of discarding fish back into the sea is economic and environmental madness. Scottish Liberal Democrats welcomed the plans laid out by the European Commission to ban this practise as part of the reforms to the Common Fisheries Policy.
“Given the Commission has made moves to rectify this situation, we need assurances from Brussels that this will happen in the given time scale.
“We cannot let this opportunity slip through the net given the pressing need for Scotland to be assured of the long term sustainability of our fish stocks and seas.”
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
