New Grimsby fish plant go ahead
Published:  07 September, 2011

PLANS for a new world beating seafood factory in Grimsby have just been given the go-ahead.

North East Lincolnshire Council Planning Committee has granted permission for the  project on the town’s showpiece business park, Europarc. The news also comes on the eve of the second Humber Seafood Summit in Grimsby.

The company behind the project is Jaines and Son Ltd, one of Grimsby’s most progressive fish processing businesses.

The development, will cover an area measuring just over 1,000  square metres on a greenfield section of Europarc – and create at least 12 new jobs.

Chris Sparkes, managing director of Jaines & Son, said: "This is a fantastic achievement by all involved. The new bespoke factory is vital for the growth of the company and takes us into the next stage of development.

He added: "This is a solid investment for the future and will not only secure employment for our existing staff but will create much needed new jobs for the area."

Councillor Chris Shaw, leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "We are pleased to be able to support the expansion of this important local business.

"Our partners, Balfour Beatty Workplace, have worked closely with the company to make sure that the factory will fit well into this high quality business park.

"Development like this shows North East Lincolnshire really is a place of opportunity for new and existing businesses."

In  July  Jaines & Son received £489,000 from the European fisheries Fund towards the project. Chris Sparkes’  family has been involved with the fishing industry since his great grandfather moved to the town from Essex in 1895. Although the company specialises in skate and ray, it also handles  over 25 other  different varieties of fish including all the main popular species. Chris is a founder of the Skate and Ray Association of Great Britain.

Chris’s family has been involved with the fishing industry since his great grandfather moved to the town from Essex in 1895. He bought Jaines & Son Ltd in 1990. The company currently employs 30 people, but that figure will grow when the new factgory opens. Building work should start either later this year or early next year.
