Whitby Seafoods nets nationwide Tesco contract
Published:  07 September, 2011

WHITBY Seafoods has just landed a groundbreaking deal to supply Tesco stores nationwide with its highly acclaimed scampi products.

The company had previously been supplying Britain's largest supermarket chain on a regional basis, reaching around 150 stores. This new contract means its will be going into arond 700 stores from this week.

Whitby Seafoods was founded in 1985 by Graham Whittle from the assets of the Whitby Shellfish company.  Over the next 25 years he, along with the help of his family, has built the business into the leading scampi supplier in the UK.  Graham still runs the business together with his daughter Laura and his sons, Edward and Daniel, and an ever growing team.

Graham began selling his high quality scampi to local restaurants and pubs but as demand for British scampi grew so did the business and he began supplying other local outlets. Through true Yorkshire spirit and a determination to succeed, Whitby Seafoods is now the number one supplier for food service scampi in the UK, and is also proud to provide Whitby Scampi to some of the nation’s favourite restaurants, pubs and wholesalers.  Over the years, Whitby Seafoods has gone from strength to strength and is currently the largest employer in Whitby, employing 130 people in the region.

Driven by the desire to make all their products local, healthy and sustainable, Whitby Seafoods products are coated, frozen and packed in Whitby and all the scampi used in Whitby Scampi is caught in UK waters by UK fishermen, and of course fishermen from Whitby fishing in the North Sea.

Graham Whittle told Fishupdate: “We are proud to have worked together with Tesco and that this relationship has blossomed into a national distribution.  This is a very exciting opportunity for us to take our Whitby Scampi national with Tesco. Now people across the country will get to understand that Whitby Scampi stands for great quality and a taste of the sea.

Caroline Bartop, Tesco regional marketing director for the north and east of England said: “As a Yorkshire girl born and bred, I have always enjoyed visiting Whitby and knew that Whitby Scampi was one of the best! Whitby Scampi has been so popular in Yorkshire and it has such a great British heritage that we knew we had to take this great local line nationwide. The rate of sale of the product was so high in local stores that we knew it was more than worthy of extending nationally. Since then, to help grow their business, we have worked closely with them on some fantastic promotions and sampling activity using their Scampi Camper to raise awareness in store car parks and with money off coupons."
