Lower salmon prices continue to put brake on Norwegian seafood exports
Published:  06 September, 2011

The value of exports of Norwegian Seafood in July totalled 3.5 billion Norwegian kroners (£399-million sterling)  – a decline of  269 million kroners  (£30.6 million)  or seven per cent compared to the same month last year. And again lower salmon prices were mainly to blame.

For the year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian Seafood totals 29.3 billion kroners  (£3.3 billion), an increase of 1.6 billion kroners (£182-million)  on the same period last year. This sets a new export record for the period, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

The value of exports of Norwegian salmon fell in July by 430 million kroners (£49-million)  or 16 per cent compared to the same month last year. The reason for this decline is lower export prices on world markets. In the same month, the volume of exports of Norwegian Salmon increased by 3.4 per cent. However, in this year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon is still up standing  at 17.3 billion kroners  (£1.9 billion), up by 732 million kroners  (£80-million) compared to the same period last year. France and Russia were the biggest exports markets for Norwegian Salmon in July, but exports to the EU countries were slightly up.

Exports of fresh and frozen cod and haddock products were up in July by 36 million kroners  (£4-million)  to a total of 480 million kroners (£54.6 million) . This increase is attributable primarily to increased exports of fresh and frozen haddock. For the year to date, total exports for this sector stand at 3.5 billion, slightly up on the same period last year. Figures also show that sales of frozen cod and haddock and dried cod continue to rise during August.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian mackerel fishing season is getting underway with about 20 registered boats taking part in the operation. Catches over the past week have totalled about 6,300 tons. However, skippers are reporting a cautious start to the seas and have been encountering some poor weather conditions.
