One in ten Britons do not eat fish, says Young's
Published:  05 September, 2011

New research by Young’s seafood has discovered that 11 per cent of Britons barely manage to include fish in their diet once a month, despite Government advice to eat fish at least twice a week.

The news comes as Jamie Oliver launches his new frozen fish range, aimed to encourage the public to eat more fish.

The research found that 10 per cent often snub the tasty meal as they fear they will choke on a fish bone. Research commissioned to mark the launch of Jamie Oliver by Young’s, his first ever frozen fish range, also reveals 12 per cent of 18-to-34-year-olds shun fish because they don’t know how to cook it, or even what to serve it with.

Jamie Oliver says: “Fish is definitely an area where people are really nervous. They’re over cooking it; they’re under cooking it; and don’t even mention the word bones!. Only 19% of the nation eats frozen fish even though fishcakes, fish pies and fish fingers are packed with nutrition. That’s because the freezing process seals in all the goodness like vitamins and Omega 3. Frozen fish is unbelievably tasty and great value for money, as it rarely gets wasted. And most importantly, it’s quick and easy to cook.”

A surprising 22 per cent of adults (18 to 54 year olds) are giving fish a miss because they are too worried their culinary skills are not up to scratch, and may even give their family and friends food poisoning.  This fear of fish amongst adults might also have caused the drop in under 16-year-olds regularly eating fish.

It is clear that recent sustainable fishing campaigns have had an impact on the UK’s weekly food shop, with 76 per cent of shoppers now considering new varieties of fish for meal times in order to ensure there is enough fish for future generations. These days, Brits are more likely to eat pollock, whiting and coley, rather than old favorites such as haddock or hake.

To help the nation discover the great benefits of eating frozen fish, Jamie Oliver has created his own first ever frozen fish range for the very first time. Featuring Jamie’s own recipes, the range champions high quality, sustainable alternatives to species like cod and haddock - including MSC-certified pollock fish fingers, crispy salmon & pollock fishcakes, and succulent fish pies made with wild Alaskan salmon. Jamie Oliver by Young’s is made in Grimsby and available nationwide in Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

Independent Nutritionist, Dr Carrie Ruxton says, “Fish is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet but certain unfounded myths continue to hamper our enjoyment of this nutritious food.  Frozen fish, such as the range provide by Young’s, is a fantastic way to get ‘brain food’ into everyone’s diet. The UK lags behind the rest of Europe in this respect, as our French and German neighbours are much more likely to enjoy the benefits and convenience of frozen fish.”
