SOME leading names from the world of fishing and aquaculture will be in Grimsby later this month for the second Humber Seafood Summit.
It is being held at the Humber Seafood Institute on Grimsby's Europarc on Thursday, September 8th, a with a special "seaside fish supper" the previous evening.
The event further strengthens Grimsby's reputation as the seafood centre of Europe and follows on from the first highly successful summit held in July last year.
Once again it will be hosted by Wynne Griffiths, former Young's Seafood chief executive and now chairman of the Humber Seafood Group who said that some of the speakers would follow on from last year's summit. He has managed to "net" Leendert van Hollander, the current chief executive of Young's Seafood, who will be talking about taking fishing reforms forward and doing the right thing for the consumer.
Over 100 delegates are expected to attend and there are more than a dozen speakers. They include Professor Mike Dillon from the Grimsby Institute who will talk about taking the Humber Seafood Cluster to the rest of the world; Richard Luney from Marks & Spencer on "Forever Fish"; Angus Garrett from Seafish on sustainability in the UK and Dr Piers Hart from the World Wildlife Fund who will speak about working towards a sustainable future for aquaculture.
Continuing the strong fish farming theme, Dawn Purchase from the Marine Conservation Society will talk about UK fin fish aquaculture, Seafish's James Wilson will give a paper on a sustainable future for UK shellfish aquaculture, while Keith Jeffrey from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science will speak about the future development of aquaculture in England. There will also be speakers from The Fishmongers Company, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Seafood Choices Alliance.
