A 37-year-old man died on Thursday after becoming unwell on board a fishing vessel in the North Sea.
The man was airlifted to hospital with two other crew members from the Starlight Rays vessel, which was performing stand-by duties for the oil industry in the Devenick Field, about 150 miles east of Aberdeen.
He was taken to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with one other crewman, while the third was taken to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, Shetland.
Aberdeen Coastguard were called at around 3.15pm on Thursday, after the man became unconscious.
A police spokesman said: "Grampian Police are investigating the unexplained death of a 37-year-old male on board a fishing vessel in the North Sea. The death occurred late in the afternoon. Inquiries are ongoing."
Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, said: "We know it was fume-related, whether it be that he became starved of oxygen or inhaled the fumes. It would be wrong for us to speculate, as there will be an immediate and urgent investigation carried out into the circumstances. We need to know what happened and what to do to make sure it never happens again."
