TWO award winning fish restaurants have been have been named as among the most talked about dining establishments in the UK by Tripadvisor.com, the international travel review website.
Each year millions of travellers and diners from all over the world give Tripadvisor their views on hotels and restaurants, and this month they have voted Rick Stein's 'The Seafood Restaurant' in Padstow, Cornwall and The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, a seaside fish and chip shop near the port's fishing harbour, as among the top ten most talked about restaurants.
Rick Stein, who has a number of establishments and a fish cookery school in the West Country, was also recently named as the 2011 West Country Business of the Year because of its impressive business strategy. One Trip Advisor reviewer, who said he travelled 1,300 miles to eat there, described it as the "best dining experience ever", praising its Dover sole and lobster.
At the other end of the country and price scale, the Magpie Cafe in Whitby, attracts people from all over the country simply for its fish and chips. Whitby may have lost a large part of its fishing fleet, but its seafood restaurants are winning international reputation, with much of the food and haddock supplied by the few fishing vessels that are left. One reviewer simply said "Believe the hype - the best fish and chips ever".
Housed in a distinctive 18th century black and white building, the Magpie Cafe has a long association with the fishing industry and was once owned by a local whaling family.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
