AUSTRALIA and New Zealand may be major rivals on the cricket and rugby fields, but it seems the two countries are in complete harmony when it comes to fish and seafood.
The company New Zealand King Salmon has just been voted the best aquaculture supplier at the annual Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards. Fish connoisseurs at the glittering ceremony take a lot of care in judging products from aquaculture suppliers to establish which has the best and most popular products and those which are of the highest quality.
The company's products also gained top two star and three star ratings for taste and quality at the European Seafood Show in Brussels a few months ago.
New Zealand King Salmon is sold under the Regal King Salmon brand in Australia. The company's Australian general manager Markus Gerlich compiled the entry focusing on a staff motto of "we care".
He said: It's very much within our psyche to focus on caring for customers, our wholesalers, about our fish and about the environment." The entry highlighted NZ King Salmon's world class farming practises supported by its Global Trust accreditation as well as its awards from the British Humane Society for its harvesting practices.
Mr Gerlich pointed out that Regal King Salmon differentiates its brand by the calibre of leading chefs who choose to serve the fish in their food establishments. New Zealand King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne says the Sydney win continues a stellar year for the company which is based in Marlborough in the North East sector of New Zealand's South island.
Earlier this year, the New Zealand King Salmon Company has applied to create more fish farms in the area to double its output to 15,000 tonnes by 2015 as part of a long-term plan to become an NZ $500-million company.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
