Clyde Coastguard staff's appeal against closure
Published:  01 August, 2011

Clyde Coastguard is contacting politicians and newspapers in Scotland in an effort to get as many signatures as possible on a petition calling for the station to remain open.

While it was announced earlier this month that coastguard stations in Shetland and Stornoway had escaped closure as part of an overhaul of the service, the UK government has announced that it plans to go ahead with the closure of the Forth and Clyde bases.

A ststament from the operationl staff at Clyde Coastguard said: "Clyde Coastguard is the busiest station in Scotland and N.Ireland and fourth busiest station in the United Kingdom.

"The busiest Search and Rescue helicopter in the UK is in Clyde Coastguards' district and they have more Coastguard Rescue teams and RNLI lifeboats than any other station in the UK and N orthern Ireland.

"Clyde's district covers the largest area of coastline in the UK with the West Coast of Scotland being one of the most challenging area's to sail and navigate in the world.

"There are more ferry routes in the Clyde's district than anywhere else in the UK.

"The UK's Nuclear Deterrent is based less than one mile away from the station. These were all considerations when a MRCC (Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre) was opened at Clyde and they are still valid reasons why this station should not close.

"Please could you sign and forward the following link to as many people as you can,  your help would be most welcome: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/saveclydecoastguard/."

The original proposals would have retained one 24-hour station in Aberdeen and a second base in either Shetland or Stornoway - which would only be open during daylight hours.

The Forth and Clyde bases are now set to close at some point between 2012 and 2015, wiht the loss of 31 jobs at Clyde.

The new plans will also be put out to consultation, with 6 October set as the deadline for views.
