Fish farmer hits jackpot with Las Vegas shrimp operation!
Published:  01 August, 2011

AN enterprising American businessman has launched a shrimp aquaculture operation in the desert-like land close to the famous gambling city of Las Vegas.

The man behind this ground-breaking  project is Scott McManus, chief executive of Blue Oasis Pure Shrimp, who has opened the new Aqua Ganix shrimp farm producing Blue Oasis Pure Shrimp in North Las Vegas.

He brings in pathogen-free Mexican white shrimp larvae direct from Florida, which are then grown in more than 40 ponds made from recycled shipping containers that are filled with water treated with a special formula.

After a period of around four months they will be harvested and shipped to local restaurants, of which there are hundreds in Las Vegas and where shrimp is almost always on the menu.

He hopes that diners will be tucking into the first servings of his delicious desert product in the next six or seven weeks. Local chefs who have already sampled trial products have nothing but praise for the flavour of their local shrimp produced hundreds of miles from any sea. They say the flavour is sweet and tender.

Blue Ocean Pure Shrimp, which opened its plant about four months ago,  is planning to produce 450,000 pounds of shrimp per year in a sustainable way producing no wastewater and allowing the shrimp to be grown without the use of chemicals. Scott's operation is highly eco-friendly and most of the water it uses is recycled which is a big plus in the United States these days.

Scott said: "One of the things that makes our technology so unique as well as so special is our ability to place these plants as well as facilities anywhere in the United States or the universe for that matter."
